I'd love to hear other people's experiences with these kinds of tools. How far would a tool like this get you in writing a track? Demo it and find out for yourself! But is it essential? It just depends on how complex your compositions are. Chord suggestion seems to be an incredible feature, IMO one of the main selling points of Scaler. I could see Scaler being useful for when you've exhausted the most go-to progressions and you find yourself going down the same roads again and again. But it really depends on what you're doing. As an Ableton user whose about to get Live 11, I may wait to we get enough new tools (like locking the piano roll to a scale) to help with building chords. I don't view it as a slimmed down composition tool like Captain Plugins or Odesi. As I see it, Scaler will help build chord progressions and quickly try out more advanced music theory techniques. It seems better suited as a supplemental tool to your DAW. With that info I think I’ll wait for iPad version. maxwellhouser said: Thanks for that krassmann. I’ll try the desktop demo in the meantime. I write on iPad a lot so that works for me.

That’s not enough discount knowing I’m just going to buy iOS as soon as it drops. Scaler seems to be partly a compositional tool, but also a chord progression exploration machine. With that info I think I’ll wait for iPad version, desktop has a big sale- 16 off right now. For example, composing variations on a pattern in Ableton via Session Mode is infinitely easier than testing out varied patterns in Odesi. At that point you're dealing with editing/keyboard shortcut limitations which a DAW is already pretty awesome at. There's a point where taking a composition beyond 8-16 bar loops is kind of annoying in Odesi. Honestly, it's usually about that easy for me to get that 10% in the DAW too.

Yes, it was easy to throw ideas together quickly, but the part of composition it got me through was like the first exciting 10% of writing a track. We have also added a cool reverb, delay, and a powerful crunchy drive.

Apparently the super powerful DAW I paid lots of $$$ for is too distracting, so I needed simpler, more limited software that forced me to focus on composition without indexing too heavily on sound design or the technical aspects of production. I recently tried Odesi, which is a sort of standalone version of Captain Plugins. Here's a quick personal experience with one of the Captain tools that might help you decide if you need a composition tool at all. For those looking at a compositional tool like Scaler 2, you've probably come across Captain Plugins as well.
